Factors Influencing Self-esteem among the Elderly Utilizing Senior Citizen Halls

Abstract
The purposes of this paper were to examine the level of self-esteem among the elderly attending Senior Citizen Halls(Kyung-Ro-Dang), and to identify factors influencing self-esteem for them. This paper use determinants of self-esteem of
individual, family, and social environment levels. 222 older adults, who are 60 years and over, residing in Suwon Si, Gyeonggi-Do, Korea were interviewed, using self-esteem scale. The results indicated that the mean score of self-esteem among respondents was 31.19(sd=4.92). Bivariate analyses resulted that self-esteem of the elderly respondents is related to religion, living arrangement, job, and frequency of leisure and volunteer activities. Multiple regression analyses showed that the factors affecting self-esteem of the elderly utilizing the Elderly Respect Halls were the frequency of leisure and volunteer activities, job, and religion. The most power predictor of self-esteem was variable of frequency of leisure and volunteer activities. This paper suggest further research to fully understand self-esteem of the elderly and to respond appropriate steps for the elderly living in community. Implications for social work for the aged were further discussed.
